Our Point of View
The past few years has seen rapid acceleration of pre-existing trends towards digitalisation, sustainability and the need for supply chains that mitigate the impact of geo-political risks. Even before COVID-19, financial services firms were affected by non-traditional digital competition, while brick-and-mortar operations in retail and hospitality were challenged by players such as Lazada and AirBnB. Internationally, we saw the property sector shifting from housing bank branches and high street shops, towards logistics assets, brand-experience centres and co-working spaces.
Since COVID-19, even in highly regulated sectors such as healthcare, laws have changed to allow increased digital interactions (such as telehealth). Additionally, sustainability is no longer about making promises, but being able to publish metrics that show a company is moving towards being carbon neutral, with banks now shouldering the responsibility for supporting sustainability goals in how they choose their customers.

In addition to these global trends, many Malaysian companies face additional challenges due to our unique environment. Firstly, digital talent is still scarce, and most HR departments do not know how to evaluate external digital talent. Secondly, many large Malaysian companies are owned by institutional investors who expect healthy dividend payouts, resulting in a risk-averse mindset towards new investments. Thirdly, the Malaysian market is relatively small, especially if one were to focus on the upper-middle-income and high-income segments. This makes it hard for a new business to achieve economies of scale.
